Picking up from where we last left off, here are seven more romantic movies – this time, from the 21st century – to round out your Valentine’s Day plans.
Part 2: From the 21st Century
8. The Notebook
This movie definitely made a splash when it was released way back in 2004, but there’s a timeless quality about it that makes it ripe for watching any time you’re feeling sentimental. That scene where Noah and Allie are dancing in the middle of the street under a stoplight with Billie Holiday gently crooning “I’ll Be Seeing You” in the background is reason enough for a re-watch every time you feel the blues.
9. 50 First Dates
Getting someone to fall in love with you is difficult. Getting someone to fall in love with you every single day is impossible. Though that may be the case, it didn’t stop Adam Sandler from trying to win Drew Barrymore’s amnesiac heart every time she forgot him. That final scene when we find out that they end up married and live on a boat in Alaska still warms my heart.
10. Crazy Rich Asians
“Crazy Rich Asians” was indubitably one of the most successful movies of 2018. If you’ve seen the movie, you would probably agree with me when I say that the wedding scene just blew everyone away. Don’t even get me started on that airplane proposal that ends with Eleanor’s ring in the box. Goosebumps!
11. Pride and Prejudice
For bookworms and cinema geeks, nothing can compare to the aloof charm of the dashing Mr. Darcy. Although extremely callous and classist in the beginning, you’re sure to warm up to him when he proclaims his love to Elizabeth under the pouring rain when he declares “I love you. Most ardently.”
12. 13 Going on 30
In this coming of age movie, Jenna – played by Jennifer Garner – gets more than she bargained for when she wakes up seventeen years into the future the morning after her disastrous 13th birthday. I think we all wanted a Matty to make us a dollhouse and some magic dust after watching this movie.
13. Mama Mia! Here We Go Again
It would be an absolute crime if this list did not include a single movie-musical, and Mama Mia: Here We Go Again makes the perfect addition. ABBA is probably one of the most famous, well-loved musical groups of the 20th century, and this movie is just a feel-good fest that never fails to lift up ones spirit. You best believe that my soul momentarily flew out of my body when Cher descended from those steps and serenaded the crowd (and a stunned Andy Garcia) with her smashing rendition of ABBA’s “Fernando”.
14. Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement
It is so rare for a movie’s sequel to offer the same level of excitement, inspiration, and storytelling as the first installment, but Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement definitely ticks all those boxes. What could possibly be more romantic than Chris Pine giving up his ridiculous scheme to steal the throne from Anne Hathaway and professing his love for her as her loyal, royal subject?
