After the opening weekend of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament, defending champions NU Lady Bulldogs showed that they are primed and ready to defend their title.
The Adamson Lady Falcons, DLSU Lady Spikers, and FEU Lady Tamaraws also picked up wins in their opening matches to get an early lead in the team standings as the tournament officially got underway. But the Lady Bulldogs, the winners of the Shakey’s Super League Preseason Collegiate title last year, looked like their dominant selves, sweeping the Ateneo Blue Eagles, 25-15, 25-20, 25-16 at the Mall of Asia Arena last Saturday.
Leading the way for NU was UAAP Best Opposite Spiker and Shakey’s Super League Most Valuable Player Alyssa Solomon, who finished with 12 points. Also chipping in was UAAP Finals MVP Princess Robles with 11 points, while UAAP Rookie of the Year and MVP Bella Belen added eight points.
Orchestrating the offense for the Lady Bulldogs was Camilla Lamina, who had 17 excellent sets in the match. The Blue Eagles, which finished third in the previous season, were led by AC Miner’s nine points, while reigning UAAP Second Best Outside Spiker Faith Nisperos and veteran Vanie Gandler added eight points apiece.
The victory was the 19th straight for NU, dating back to UAAP Season 82, which was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Lady Bulldogs also swept all their matches in the Shakey’s Super League on their way to being crowned as the tournament’s inaugural champions.
